Pacifiers as a Pain Reducer?

Today at the Dr.'s office, the Dr. explained that something in the action of sucking actually creates a reduction in pain for infants; that it is more than just a soother.  He recommended using a pacifier with infants when they are receiving vaccinations, being circumcised, etc.  I really like the Gerber First Essential Natural Flex pacifiers.  Because the nipple is soft, it requires a baby to suck in a way that is similar to latching on when breastfeeding.  The pacifier flexes in a way similar to a mother's nipple.  The shield is also lightweight and small, which makes it easier for babies to grab on to and provides good ventilation.  So next time you head to the Dr. for those icky shots, grab your pacifier!
